The swabbing tool, which is branded RAICo, was designed to be attached to Spot's arm so it can copy the way a human hand swabs.
Every day, the health physics team at Sellafield does hundreds of swabs to collect data about radiation levels. This information is important for planning how to safely take apart old parts of the plant and keep everyone safe. In the recent trial, the RAICo swabbing tool was attached to Spot, and the robot was sent into a restricted area to check a surface that had been made to look like it was contaminated. The team also created special software that tells Spot how to move its arm in the same way a person would. Dr. Kirsty Hewitson, the director of RAICo, said that this trial followed a similar successful test at another nuclear facility in Oxfordshire.
