Now, TikTok says it might collect GPS data, but only if you choose to allow it. The company says this feature will be optional and turned off by default, so you will have to say yes if you want to use it. TikTok has not said exactly when this update will be available for American users.

In other countries, like the UK and Europe, TikTok already collects precise location data for a feature called 'Nearby Feed. ' This feature helps users find events and businesses close to them. The new American joint venture is also expanding the information it collects about how users interact with TikTok's artificial intelligence tools. This includes the questions you ask the AI and information about when and where you use these tools.

The US government has been worried about TikTok for a long time. Some leaders are concerned that the Chinese government could get access to American users' data. In 2024, the US passed a law that said TikTok would be banned in the US by January 2025 unless ByteDance sold its US operations to American investors. Former President Trump helped make the deal happen, and now the new joint venture is in charge of TikTok in the US. ByteDance still owns less than 20 percent of the company.
