Underpass art to represent 'light and positivity'

In Bedford, a group of young children from Castle Newnham School took part in a wonderful project to paint an underpass that was in need of some care. This underpass, located near the Embankment and Aspects Leisure Park, had been closed for several weeks due to flooding issues. However, it has now been transformed with a vibrant design that symbolizes 'light and positivity'. The renovation included the installation of new lighting, fixing a water leak, and resurfacing the pavement. Artists, local helpers, and the young students collaborated to create beautiful murals on the walls of the underpass. These murals feature colorful images, including trees and boats, which replaced the old, faded paintings that were previously there. Bedford Creative Arts, an organization commissioned by the Bedford Borough Council, was responsible for this uplifting project. They stated, 'It had been in need of some TLC for a long time, often being prone to flooding. ' Local artists Sarah Harrison and Paige Denham worked closely with the young people to develop the designs and artwork. Pat Jennings, the manager of the Bedfordshire Youth Offending Service, shared that the young participants expressed their feelings about the biases and stigma they face due to their past behaviors. This discussion led to a creative exploration of poetry and song, which inspired the vibrant designs that now adorn the underpass. Jennings emphasized the importance of finding inspiration to help overcome everyday struggles. One participant from the young offender program expressed their initial doubts about their artistic abilities, saying, 'I wasn't sure I would be any good at it but I have really enjoyed it and am proud of the painting I've done. ' Another young artist, Matilda, shared her excitement about the project, stating, 'I really like all the colors and shapes. ' A passer-by named Valerie Bailey commented on the impressive renovation, saying it looked amazing and even suggested that the group should consider brightening up the rest of the town. The project received support from local leaders, including Bedford Borough Green councillors Lucy Bywater, Paul Edmonds, and Liberal Democrat councillor Hilde Hendrickx, along with a grant from the Safer Bedfordshire Community Fund. Ms. Bywater expressed her delight, stating, 'It's an amazing and cheerful design that really brightens the underpass and makes the experience of using it so much more joyful than before. ' Councillor Sarah Gallagher praised the initiative, calling it a 'fantastic example of how art can transform public spaces and bring communities together.
