Wife of South Korea's jailed ex-president arrested
South Korea is making headlines after the arrest of Kim Keon Hee, the wife of the country's former president, Yoon Suk Yeol. This is a historic moment because it is the first time both a former president and first lady have been jailed in South Korea. Kim Keon Hee was taken into custody after a court hearing in Seoul that lasted four hours. During the hearing, she denied all the charges against her, but the judge decided to issue a detention warrant, saying there was a risk she might destroy evidence related to her case.
Kim faces several serious accusations. Prosecutors claim she was involved in a stock price manipulation scheme with Deutsch Motors, a BMW dealership in South Korea. They say she made more than 800 million won, which is about $577,940, by helping to rig the prices of the company's stocks. Although this allegedly happened before her husband became president, the controversy continued to affect his time in office. In addition to the stock manipulation charges, Kim is accused of accepting luxury gifts, including two Chanel bags and a diamond necklace, from the Unification Church. Prosecutors believe these gifts were bribes given in exchange for business favors.
Kim is also charged with interfering in political candidate nominations during the parliamentary by-elections in 2022 and the general elections last year. When she appeared in court, she wore a black suit and skirt and looked very solemn. She apologized to reporters, saying she was sorry for causing trouble. While Yoon Suk Yeol was president, he vetoed three bills that would have allowed a special investigation into Kim's alleged crimes. He issued his last veto just a week before he declared martial law, which eventually led to his removal from office. After Yoon was ousted, his rival Lee Jae Myung became president and set up a special counsel in June to investigate Kim. Supporters of Yoon and Kim continue to show their loyalty, holding signs that say they will fight alongside the former president.
