Phone theft has become a growing problem in London and other major cities. Paul Brennan, the chairman of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association, said that phone theft is 'skyrocketing' in London. Thieves often use electric bikes to make quick getaways, wearing black clothing and covering their faces with balaclavas and hoods. Many tourists and regular visitors are now canceling their trips to London because they feel it is not safe. In 2024, more than 117,000 phones were reported stolen in the UK, a 25 percent increase from 2019. The Metropolitan Police have noticed that most phone snatchers use lightweight electric motorbikes that can reach speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. To keep up with these criminals, the police have invested in their own fleet of high-powered electric bikes. Sergeant Ryan Perry from the police force said that the presence of these bikes helps deter thieves and makes it easier to catch them.

The fight against phone theft is not limited to the streets. Police helicopters are also used to track and catch thieves from the air. The helicopters are equipped with cameras that can zoom in and capture clear images of suspects' faces. Andrew Lawless, a tactical flight officer, said that once a helicopter is overhead, it becomes much harder for thieves to escape. The mere presence of a helicopter can make criminals scatter and abandon their plans. In addition to the police, some citizens are taking action as well. Diego Galdino, a delivery driver, has become known as a 'pickpocket hunter. ' He films pickpocket incidents and posts them online to warn others. The British Transport Police have also noticed that some thieves commute into London from other cities or even fly in from abroad, treating phone theft as a full-time job. These organized groups often work in teams, making it difficult to recover stolen items. The police are working hard to combat this growing problem and keep the public safe.
