Northern Ireland's Bold New Plan to Triple Tree Planting by 2032!

Northern Ireland has launched its first ever tree planting action plan, aiming to increase the amount of woodland across the country. At the moment, only 8. 6 percent of Northern Ireland is covered by trees, which is much lower than Scotland, Wales, England, and the Republic of Ireland. The new plan, described as 'ambitious' by Environment Minister Andrew Muir, sets out ten main actions to be taken over the next five years. The goal is to more than triple the current rate of tree planting by 2032, so that by 2050, 12 percent of Northern Ireland will be covered by woodland.

The plan was created by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, working together with groups like the Woodland Trust, forestry companies, environmental organizations, farmers, and local councils. John Martin, the chief executive of the Woodland Trust in Northern Ireland, said the plan is much needed and will help move the country in the right direction. He explained that there have been challenges in getting landowners interested in planting trees, but he hopes the new plan will encourage more people to get involved. The plan also includes a commitment to plant 2,585 hectares of new woodland by 2027, but an extra 1,205 hectares will be needed to meet the target. In the long term, another 50,000 hectares of woodland must be created to reach the 2050 goal.

The plan's ten actions cover areas like governance, communication, education, and research. Nigel Manley, chair of the Confederation of Forest Industries, pointed out that the UK imports millions of cubic metres of wood every year, and demand is expected to grow. He believes that supporting the tree planting plan will help create jobs, boost investment, and make timber production more sustainable. The Ulster Farmers' Union said that farmers should have the choice to plant trees if it makes sense for their business, and that the plan should provide clear and balanced information. President John McLenaghan said that tree planting won't suit every farm, but the plan should help those who want to take part. Overall, the new tree planting action plan is seen as an important step for Northern Ireland, with benefits for the environment, the economy, and local communities.
