Lady in Blue Struts into Trafalgar Square, Shining in Lapis Lazuli Glow!

A striking new sculpture called 'Lady in Blue' has been unveiled on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London. The artwork features a black woman dressed in a vivid lapis lazuli blue dress and matching heels, captured in mid-stride as she walks forward with purpose. The artist, Tschabalala Self from New York, created the statue to represent a modern, everyday woman living in London. Unlike the statues of kings and military leaders that usually stand in Trafalgar Square, 'Lady in Blue' is meant to be someone ordinary, someone many people can relate to. The statue is made of bronze and painted with a special blue pigment made from Lapis Lazuli, a semi-precious stone that artists have used for centuries.

The Fourth Plinth has a unique history. It was empty for more than 150 years because there was not enough money to finish a statue of King William IV. In 1998, a new program began to commission contemporary artworks for the plinth every two years. Since then, sixteen different sculptures have been displayed there, each bringing something new to the square. The previous artwork, 'A Thousand Times in an Instant' by Teresa Margolles, has now been replaced by 'Lady in Blue. ' Tschabalala Self was chosen as the winning artist by the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group, which is made up of independent experts. Her design will stay on the plinth for two years, and another artist, Andra Ursuta, will have her work displayed in 2028.

The unveiling of 'Lady in Blue' was attended by many visitors and officials. Justine Simons, the deputy mayor for culture and creative industries, said the sculpture is a powerful addition to the historic area. The statue stands out against the backdrop of the National Gallery and St Martin-in-the-Fields church, under a bright blue sky. Tschabalala Self is known for her work in painting, printmaking, and sculpture, often using sewn and printed materials to create images of people. She had her first major exhibition in London and has continued to show her art in the city. The Fourth Plinth project has become an important part of London's art scene, giving artists a chance to showcase their work in a famous public space. 'Lady in Blue' celebrates the spirit of London and the everyday women who live there.
