Tencent using Hunyuan AI model in 180 services amid competition with local rivals Baidu and Alibaba
Tencent Holdings, a leading Chinese company in social networking and video gaming, has integrated its artificial intelligence (AI) model, Hunyuan, into a multitude of its products and services. This move comes amidst fierce competition in the rapidly growing AI sector in China, the world's second largest economy. Hunyuan, a large language model (LLM), is similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT and has been incorporated into over 180 services, as announced on Tencent's WeChat platform.
Tencent reports that the integration of Hunyuan has led to improvements in several of its services, including the Tencent Meeting conferencing app, the Tencent Docs word processor, and its online advertising and WeChat search functions. Clients from diverse sectors such as retail, education, finance, medicine, and media are already leveraging the Hunyuan model. Furthermore, Tencent's engineers have been utilizing Hunyuan, which has been trained with 32 major programming languages and a wealth of technical literature, to assist with daily coding and debugging tasks.
The trend of integrating AI across all product offerings is not unique to Tencent; domestic and international tech giants are also following suit. Baidu, for instance, has made its Ernie Bot central to its cloud computing strategy, while Alibaba Group has integrated its Tongyi Qianwen model into products like the e-commerce platform Taobao and the communication app DingTalk. Big Tech firms are banking on AI as a future revenue driver, with Tencent unveiling an enterprise service based on Hunyuan last month. However, Tencent is exercising caution in making Hunyuan available for public use due to potential political sensitivities.
