Three killed in New Caledonia as riots escalate after Paris vote

The French Pacific territory of New Caledonia has been engulfed in violent riots following the approval of controversial constitutional changes. The unrest, which is the most severe since the 1980s, was sparked by proposals to grant voting rights to French residents who have lived in the territory for 10 years. This move has triggered widespread protests and clashes, particularly among the indigenous Kanak people, who fear that their political influence will be further diminished. In response to the escalating violence, President Emmanuel Macron has declared a state of emergency in the territory and issued a stern warning against continued unrest. The violence, which began after the proposed changes were put forward by lawmakers in Paris, has resulted in significant damage and casualties. The capital Nouméa witnessed violent protests on Monday night, with reports of exchanges of fire between rioters and civil defence groups. Subsequently, French authorities imposed a night-time curfew and banned public gatherings, but 'serious disturbances' continued, including an attempted prison break-out.
