Dolly Parton's Book Magic Spreads Joy to More Isle of Man Kids!
Dolly Parton, the well-known country music star, has always cared about helping children learn to read. In 1995, she started a project called the Imagination Library in her home state of Tennessee. The goal was to improve literacy by sending a free book every month to children under five years old. The program grew and came to the United Kingdom in 2007. This year, children in Douglas on the Isle of Man became the first on the island to be able to join the Imagination Library.
Since then, the program has expanded to include more areas on the Isle of Man. Children living in the northern villages of Andreas, Ballaugh, Bride, Jurby, Lezayre, and Maughold can now get free books each month. The latest area to join is Patrick, which is in the west of the island. Trish McDonnough, who organizes the Imagination Library on the Isle of Man, said that the mission is to make sure every child has the same chance to have books from the very start of their life. The response in Patrick has been amazing, with nearly half of the eligible children signing up in just four days.
Thanks to more funding, the Imagination Library hopes to reach even more children. The organizers are close to raising enough money to include the towns of Ramsey and Peel. Also, all parents of babies born at the Jane Crookall Maternity Unit are being offered the chance to sign up their newborns. If a child joins from birth, they can receive up to 60 books by the time they turn five. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is making a big difference by helping children on the Isle of Man develop a love for reading and giving them the tools they need to succeed in school and life.
