How The Thursday Murder Club transformed a village

Aldbury, a charming village in Hertfordshire, was transformed into the fictional town of Fairhaven for the filming of The Thursday Murder Club, a movie based on Richard Osman's popular novel. In July 2024, Helen Mirren and other well-known actors arrived in Aldbury to shoot scenes for the Netflix adaptation. The production team made many changes to the village, including redecorating the village hall to look like a police station and turning the local shop into a cozy tea room.

The filming brought more than just excitement to Aldbury. The production crew provided funds that were used to improve the village. The money helped refurbish the common area, upgrade the school playground, and add a duck house to the pond. Nearly 40 white posts were installed near the pond, and although most of the movie props were removed after filming, the villagers liked the posts so much that they decided to keep them. Ray Warren, the vice chair of the parish council, said that the benefits of having the film crew in the village far outweighed any disruptions.

During the shoot, some villagers were paid for allowing their homes to be used, and residents enjoyed free coffee. The film, produced by Steven Spielberg's company and directed by Chris Columbus, features a star-studded cast including Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, Ben Kingsley, and David Tennant. The story follows a group of retirees who work together to solve a murder mystery. The success of the book has led to several sequels, with a fifth installment expected in September. Aldbury has not only gained improvements but also a sense of pride from being part of a major film production.
