Bridlington's Gansey Girl Mural Knits History into Vibrant Seaside Art
Bridlington, a seaside town in East Yorkshire, is now home to a beautiful new mural that celebrates its history and the people who live there. The mural shows a woman from the 19th century, dressed in simple clothes, knitting a traditional fisherman’s sweater called a gansey. These sweaters were important because women made them for their husbands or loved ones who worked at sea, hoping to keep them warm and safe. The woman is standing in front of a church window, with sunlight shining through, and there are birds in the painting too. One bird carries a lamp, and another is flying to the side.
The artist, Sam Porter, created this mural and another one nearby. He said that people have been very excited about the paintings. Many stop to look, take photos, and share them on social media. Sam explained that the idea of a gansey girl is something everyone can relate to, because it shows someone doing something kind and thoughtful for someone they care about. The mural is located on High Street, at the corner with Scarborough Road, and was inspired by a statue of a gansey girl at the Bridlington harbour. The painting also includes symbols that are important to Bridlington, like a jackdaw, a swallow carrying an amber stone, and a window from the Priory Church.
The second mural, which is on Prince Street near the harbour, shows a fishing boat called a coble struggling in huge waves during the Great Gale of 1871. The painting also features a puffin, gannets, and a lobster. The Great Gale was a terrible storm that hit Bridlington Bay and affected many people, including lifeboat crews. Sam Porter said he chose the style of the boat after talking to local people about what they wanted to see. Angela Merrills from the local council said that they asked residents for their ideas, and Sam did an amazing job bringing those ideas to life. The murals are part of a larger project to improve the town, which includes new paths, benches, lighting, and security cameras. The project is funded by the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund and aims to make Bridlington a better place for everyone.
