Novo Nordisk, a well-known company from Denmark, has announced a major investment in Ireland. The company is going to spend over €400 million to upgrade its factory in Athlone, County Westmeath. This big project will allow them to start making a tablet version of their popular weight loss drug, Wegovy. Until now, Wegovy and similar medicines have mostly been given as injections, but now Novo Nordisk is working on making them available as tablets, which many people find easier to take. The tablet form of Wegovy was approved for sale in the United States earlier this year, and it is expected to be approved in other countries soon. The Athlone factory will focus on making these tablets for markets outside the US. Kasper Bødker Mejlvang, who is an Executive Vice President at Novo Nordisk, said that this investment is a historic milestone for the company. He also said it shows their strong commitment to Ireland and to the skilled workers in Athlone. Construction on the new part of the factory has already started, and it is expected to continue until 2028.

Eli Lilly makes the main ingredients for its weight loss drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound, at its factory in Kinsale, County Cork. After making the ingredients, they are sent by air to the United States, making Eli Lilly one of the biggest exporters in Ireland. The competition between Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly is getting stronger, especially as patents for some of these drugs are set to expire in the future.
