People living in Jersey are being warned about the risks of artificial intelligence, or AI, especially when it comes to images and videos created by these new technologies. Paul Vane, the Information Commissioner for Jersey, has spoken out about how AI is already being used to harm real people. Along with other officials from Guernsey and more than 60 other places, Vane has signed a statement to show how serious this issue is.

These fake images and videos, sometimes called deepfakes, can be used to trick people or hurt someone's reputation. For example, just last week, a social media account posted deepfake content that targeted school staff in Jersey. This kind of content can be very damaging, especially if people believe it is real.

To help protect people, the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner and the Guernsey Office of the Data Protection Authority have released guidance. They suggest that people should limit what they share online, be careful when using AI platforms, and talk to children about how they use these tools. It is important to think about what you post and who might see it. By being cautious and learning about the risks, people can help prevent the harm that AI-generated images and videos can cause. The officials hope that by working together and sharing information, the community can stay safe as technology continues to change.
