Historic Library's Rare Treasures Go Digital for Global Bookworms

The Gibson Library, located in Saffron Walden, Essex, is a Grade II listed building that holds a remarkable collection of rare and historic books. Recently, the Gibson Library Society received a grant of one hundred thirty-nine thousand pounds from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Martyn Everett, the chairman of the Gibson Library Society, expressed his excitement about the grant, saying that thanks to National Lottery players, the library will be able to preserve and share its unique treasures with people not just in Essex, but across the country and around the world.

As part of the digital discovery project, the library will create a new website where people can view the collections online. This means that anyone, no matter where they live, will be able to explore the library's rare books and illustrations. There will also be a special catalogue for researchers, making it easier for them to find and study the materials they need. The Gibson Library was originally established in 1832 as the Saffron Walden Literary and Scientific Institution. Today, it is an independent library and a registered charity, with Essex County Council as its sole trustee. The digitisation project will help ensure that the library's collections are preserved for future generations and accessible to a much wider audience.
