Prada’s $930 Kolhapuri Sandals: Luxury Meets Indian Craftsmanship!

Prada, the well-known Italian luxury fashion brand, has announced a new line of footwear inspired by the traditional Kolhapuri sandals from India. This comes after Prada faced criticism earlier for releasing sandals that closely resembled Kolhapuri chappals but did not acknowledge their Indian origins. The Kolhapuri chappal is a handcrafted leather sandal that has been made in Maharashtra and Karnataka for centuries. Many people in India felt that Prada was using their design without giving proper credit, which led to accusations of cultural appropriation.

To address these concerns, Prada has partnered with two state-backed organizations in India to produce 2,000 pairs of Kolhapuri-inspired sandals. These will be made in Maharashtra and Karnataka, and the collection will be available for purchase in February 2026. The sandals will be sold online and in 40 Prada stores worldwide, with each pair priced at around $939. Prada's head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Lorenzo Bertelli, said that the company will combine the traditional skills of Indian artisans with Prada's own manufacturing techniques.

As part of the agreement, some Kolhapuri chappal artisans will receive special training from Prada and LIDCOM, a state-supported leather industry group in Maharashtra. Additionally, about 200 artisans will travel to Italy for three years of training. The Maharashtra government will provide financial assistance to these artisans, and the partnership is set to last for five years, with hopes of extending it further. Kolhapuri sandals are named after the city of Kolhapur and have a history dating back to the 12th Century. They are known for their durability and suitability for India's hot climate. Many people are pleased that the artisans are finally being recognized and supported, and that their traditional craft will be showcased globally through Prada's new collection.
