Xi-Biden talks help restore US-China defence dialogues – but security disputes won’t go away, say analysts

However, experts are cautious, pointing out that the renewed communication might not be enough to overcome the longstanding disagreements, particularly concerning Taiwan and the sanctions the US has placed on China's ex-defense minister.

The dialogue had been on hold since a controversial visit by US officials to Taiwan, which China saw as a sign of support for Taiwan's independence. This caused China to cut off important military communication channels. But the recent meeting between Xi and Biden has brought a positive change, with both countries welcoming the return of military discussions. Despite this progress, analysts remain skeptical about the potential of these talks to ensure lasting security and stability in the region.

One of the key communication methods that had been suspended was the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA), which aims to prevent dangerous incidents at sea. However, the effectiveness of the MMCA has been questioned, especially after a serious incident in 2001 involving a collision between US and Chinese military aircraft. The two nations also have conflicting views on the rights of aircraft and ships in the South China Sea, with China claiming a large part of it through the 'nine-dash line. ' The US insists on the freedom to fly and sail in accordance with international law. The future of these discussions is still uncertain, with no set dates for talks and China yet to appoint a new defense minister.
