Digital driving headed for Hong Kong and will cut down on jams at licensing offices, Transport Department promises

By the end of this year, drivers in Hong Kong will have the option to replace their laminated paper driving licences with digital ones, according to the Transport Department. This initiative aligns with the government's broader plans to digitalise more documents, including licences and vehicle permits.

Officials have announced the development of an online platform that will allow users to access driving licence-related details, vehicle permits, and participate in virtual auctions for vehicle registration plates. This platform is expected to be operational by early next year. Angela Lee Chung-yan, the Commissioner for Transport, expressed her hopes that these new online services will provide greater convenience for the public.

The introduction of these additional e-licensing services is anticipated to streamline the application process for various licences, providing the public with greater flexibility in choosing when to submit applications. The department is also planning to introduce several different initiatives in the coming year to further enhance their digital services.
