Farewell to Korea’s Beloved TV Dad Lee Soon-jae at 91

Lee Soon-jae, a legendary figure in South Korea's entertainment industry, passed away at the age of 91. Known as the 'national TV dad,' Lee was beloved for his roles as wise fathers and grandfathers in television dramas and sitcoms. Born in 1934 in Hoeryeong, which is now part of North Korea, Lee moved to Seoul with his family when he was just four years old. He grew up helping in his grandparents' shop and witnessed Korea's liberation from Japanese rule in 1945. Lee attended Seoul National University, where he studied philosophy, but his passion for acting led him to the stage and eventually to television and film. He was inspired to become an actor after watching Sir Laurence Olivier perform Hamlet.

Throughout his career, Lee appeared in around 140 television shows and continued acting in plays until late 2024. His most memorable performances include playing a strict father in the 1991 drama 'What on Earth is Love' and a lovable, silly grandfather in the popular sitcom 'High Kick! Lee also had a brief stint in politics, serving as a member of parliament for the conservative Democratic Liberal Party from 1992 to 1996. However, he chose not to run for re-election. Lee's influence extended beyond acting, as he mentored many younger actors and was respected for his advice and kindness. His scenes from 'High Kick! Actor Yoo Yeon-seok, who studied under Lee, said he exemplified acting, while co-star Jeong Bo-seok described Lee as a true mentor in both acting and life.
