New Scan Tech Promises Faster Endometriosis Diagnosis for Women

Endometriosis is a health condition that affects about one in ten women in the UK. It happens when cells similar to those that line the womb start growing in other parts of the body, like the stomach, lower back, or pelvic area. This can cause a lot of pain, especially during periods, and can lead to other problems like heavy bleeding, tiredness, and even trouble getting pregnant. One of the biggest challenges with endometriosis is that it often takes a very long time for women to get a proper diagnosis. On average, it can take up to nine years for doctors to figure out what is wrong.

A new study from Oxford University might change this. Scientists have developed a new scanning technique that could help doctors spot endometriosis much earlier. The technique uses a special type of CT scan along with a molecular tracer called maraciclatide. This tracer attaches to areas where new blood vessels are forming, which is a sign of early endometriosis. In a small pilot study, the scan was able to correctly identify endometriosis in most of the women who took part. If larger studies confirm these results, this new scan could help women get answers and treatment much sooner.

Gabriella Pearson, who helps run a charity for women with endometriosis, knows how hard it can be to get diagnosed. She started having painful periods when she was just 10 years old, but doctors kept telling her it was normal or that she had other problems like irritable bowel syndrome. It took more than 10 years before she finally got the right diagnosis. By then, endometriosis had affected her bowel, bladder, and ovary, causing lasting damage. Gabriella says that if she had been diagnosed earlier, she could have made different choices about her education and career. She believes that the new scan could help other women avoid the long and difficult journey she went through.

Currently, the only way to be sure someone has endometriosis is through a surgery called a laparoscopy. This involves making a small cut in the abdomen and using a camera to look inside. This procedure can take years to happen and is not always easy for patients. The new scan could offer a non-invasive way to diagnose endometriosis, especially in its early stages. Dr Tatjana Gibbons, who led the study, says that many women are told their scans are normal even though they still have symptoms. She believes that getting a diagnosis earlier can help women make important decisions about their lives.

Other doctors agree that there is a desperate need for better ways to diagnose endometriosis. Dr Lucy Whitaker from the University of Edinburgh says that the new scan is exciting, but more research is needed. She also points out that the scan uses radiation, so doctors need to weigh the risks and benefits. The new technique could also help doctors see how endometriosis changes over time and how different treatments work. For now, women who have symptoms like severe period pain, heavy bleeding, tiredness, or pain in the lower abdomen, back, or pelvic area should talk to their doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in quality of life.
