Mexican Parents Slam Early School Year End for World Cup Fuss

Parents across Mexico are voicing their concerns after the government announced that the school year might end a month earlier than planned. The reason for this change is the upcoming Fifa World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada from June 11 to July 19. Education Secretary Mario Delgado said that schools would close on June 5, which would give parents less than four weeks to arrange childcare for their children. This announcement caused a lot of frustration among parents and business owners, who said the decision was made too quickly and without enough input from families. In response to the criticism, President Claudia Sheinbaum clarified that ending the school year early was only a proposal and not a final decision. She said the government would listen to more opinions before making a final choice.

The Education Secretary explained that the early end to the school year was suggested because of two main reasons: the expected increase in traffic during the World Cup and the extreme heat that is forecast for the summer. He said that the decision was made together with leaders from different states. Even though the new school year would still start on August 31, there would be two weeks of extra learning before that date to help students catch up. However, many parents were not satisfied with this explanation. Some said that their children were in the middle of important tests and now did not know how their grades would be decided. Others worried about the cost of finding activities or care for their children during the extra month of vacation.

The National Union of Parents strongly criticized the plan, calling it a one-sided decision. They pointed out that World Cup matches would only take place in three cities, so it did not make sense to close schools for all 23 million students in the country. Business groups also spoke out, saying that the sudden change would create problems for both workers and employers. They suggested that each state should make its own plan to deal with the heat and travel issues, instead of changing the school calendar for everyone. Some state governments, including two that will host World Cup games, said they would not follow the new plan and would keep the original school schedule.

President Sheinbaum responded to the backlash by saying that the idea to end school early came from teachers’ unions and state education leaders, not from the central government. She promised that the final decision would be made after more discussion. Mexico’s role as a World Cup host has already faced challenges, including safety concerns after violence in some cities earlier this year. Despite these issues, President Sheinbaum and Fifa president Gianni Infantino have both said that fans will be safe during the tournament. Mexico is preparing to welcome visitors from around the world, but many parents hope that their children’s education will not be disrupted by the event.
