Beijing's Bird Defender: Battling Poachers to Save Songbird Serenades

In China, the illegal trapping and selling of rare songbirds has become a big problem. Silva Gu, a passionate bird lover, is working hard to stop this. He spends many nights searching for poachers in the fields near Beijing. Silva and his team move quietly through the grass, looking for signs of people who set up nearly invisible nets to catch birds. These nets are dangerous because birds get stuck and cannot escape. The poachers sell the birds for a lot of money, sometimes more than what a farmer earns in a month. Silva believes that birds should be free and not trapped for profit.

Every year, millions of birds fly over China as they migrate to warmer places for the winter. China is home to more than 1,500 types of birds, and over 800 of them are migratory. These birds face many dangers, like storms and predators, but now they also have to worry about being caught in nets. The fields outside Beijing are important resting spots for these birds, but they are also where poachers set their traps. Silva and his group, the Beijing Migratory Bird Squad, try to find and remove these nets. They also work with the police to catch poachers. At first, the police did not care much, but Silva kept talking to them and showing them why it was important. Now, the police are starting to help more, and sometimes catching poachers leads to finding other crimes.

Silva’s love for birds started when he was a child. He remembers exploring the grasslands around Beijing, where he saw many birds and animals. But as the city grew, the grasslands disappeared, and so did many birds. Silva decided to spend his life protecting them. It has not been easy. He has faced threats and even violence from people who sell birds. Many of his volunteers have quit because the work is hard and sometimes dangerous. Silva uses his own money to keep going, and he studies satellite images to find where poachers might be hiding. He also tries to teach people that keeping birds in cages is not good for nature. In China, some older people still see owning a bird as a sign of wealth, but Silva hopes that younger people will learn to protect birds instead. He has helped save more than 20,000 birds and wants to keep going until the city is full of bird songs again, just like when he was young.
