Meet the Artists Who Paint and Sculpt Dinosaurs Like Never Before!

In Devon, a group of talented paleoartists are working to bring dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures to life through their art. Artists like Lee Brown from Newton Poppleford use watercolours and colored pencils to paint dinosaurs, making sure to use the latest scientific information about their bones, skin, and even feathers. Lee tries to show dinosaurs in a new way, giving them personality and making them look calm or thoughtful instead of always fierce and scary. He believes that every painting is just a guess at what the dinosaur looked like at a certain moment, and that they could have looked different at other times.

Another paleoartist, Alex Pritchard from Torquay, creates life-sized models of dinosaur skeletons for museums around the world. He started by designing dinosaur toys, but now he uses advanced techniques like 3D printing, resin casting, and traditional sculpting to make his models as realistic as possible. He is especially proud of being the first to recreate some newly discovered dinosaurs, like Berthasaura Leopoldinae from Brazil.

These artists are sharing their work at events like the Fossil Festival in Lyme Regis, where people can see their art, attend workshops, and learn more about the prehistoric world. The festival has become more focused on paleoart because more people are interested in how science and art can work together. The director of the Lyme Regis Museum, Bridget Houseago, says that paleoart helps us imagine what the Jurassic world was really like, and as science changes, so does the art. The Age of the Dinosaurs exhibition at Kents Cavern lets visitors walk among the dinosaur skeletons, making it a fun and educational experience for families.
