China launches world’s fastest internet with 1.2 terabit per second link, years ahead of forecasts

China has achieved a major milestone by launching the world's fastest internet service, which is over 10 times quicker than the current major internet connections. This new network can transfer data at an incredible speed of 1. 2 terabits per second between Beijing, Wuhan, and Guangzhou. The network stretches over 3,000 kilometers of optical fiber and was officially launched after thorough testing. nnThis groundbreaking development is the result of a collaboration between Tsinghua University, China Mobile, Huawei Technologies, and Cernet Corporation. They've managed to surpass expert predictions by introducing this ultra-high-speed network years before it was expected. While most global internet backbones are still operating at 100 gigabits per second, and the US has only recently upgraded to 400 gigabits per second, China's new network sets a new standard. It's part of the Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI), a decade-long project that's enhancing China's national education and research network. nnWu Jianping, who leads the FITI project, stated that this superfast connection is not just a successful operation but also positions China at the forefront of developing even faster internet technologies. Huawei's vice-president highlighted the network's capacity to transfer an enormous amount of data in a blink of an eye. Tsinghua University's expert compared the new network to a high-speed railway, simplifying and reducing the cost of data management. This network is crucial for various applications, from education to industrial uses like connected vehicles and smart mining operations. The FITI project, which began in 2013, is government-supported and involves collaboration with over 40 universities. It's expected to be fully operational by the end of the year. China's move towards self-reliance in internet technology is evident as all components of the system are domestically produced, including a new superfast router designed by Wu's team, which pushes the boundaries of data handling capabilities.
