Belfast Short Film 'Nostalgie' Hits Bafta Longlist with Aidan Gillen Star Power!

A short film from Belfast called Nostalgie has made it to the first stage of the Bafta awards, which is a big achievement for everyone involved. The director, Kathryn Ferguson, said she was a little stunned when she heard the news. She did not expect the film to be longlisted, which means it is being considered for a Bafta award. Nostalgie tells the story of Drew Lord Haig, played by Aidan Gillen. Drew was a famous pop star in the 1980s, but now he is not as popular and works in IT. He is invited to Belfast to perform at a special event, hoping to relive his glory days. When he sings his old hit song, the audience does not react much. But when he performs a forgotten song called Nostalgie de la Boue, the crowd suddenly becomes very excited. Drew then learns that this song was used by a battalion during the Troubles in Northern Ireland as a rallying cry. This changes how he feels about his music and his past.

The film is based on a short story by Belfast author Wendy Erskine. Kathryn Ferguson found the story after finishing her documentary about Sinéad O'Connor. She said she was drawn to Nostalgie because it was very cinematic and made her think about what happens to art when it is released into the world. Wendy Erskine said she felt confident giving her story to Kathryn and script writer Stacey Gregg because they were both very passionate and hardworking. The film also features original songs by Dan Smith from the band Bastille. Dan wrote the songs while he was on tour, and he and Kathryn worked together to make sure the music sounded like it was from the 1980s.
