The British Film Commission BFC has officially named Birmingham, in the West Midlands, as the UK's eighth production hub for film and television. This recognition highlights Birmingham's growing importance in the entertainment industry, especially after its success with the popular TV series Peaky Blinders. Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, expressed his excitement, saying he is thrilled that the West Midlands is now seen as a fantastic place to make movies and TV shows. The BFC chose Birmingham because it has the right studios, skilled local workers, and has already hosted major productions like Peaky Blinders. The city offers unique locations and a strong infrastructure that make it attractive for filmmakers.

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker called this recognition a real gamechanger for the region. He believes it will give the film and TV industry more confidence to invest in Birmingham. The city now has a dedicated production office, making it easier for new projects to get started. According to the BFC, the network of production hubs across the UK brought in £5. 8 billion in investment in 2025. This is a big boost for the local economy and creates more jobs for people in the area.

Peaky Blinders, which first aired in 2013 and ran for six seasons until 2022, is set in Birmingham and follows the story of Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy. The show has been praised for its storytelling and has helped put Birmingham on the map as a filming location. After the series ended, a feature-length film called Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man was released, and a spin-off series is in the works. Steven Knight also founded Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham, which is now a key part of the city's film industry. He said that this is just the beginning of a new journey for Birmingham in the world of film and TV.

Birmingham now joins other official production hubs in the UK, such as London, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, and Leeds. Adrian Wootton, the chief executive of the BFC, said that this recognition is a major win for Birmingham's creative community.
