Lea Salonga's Broadway Breakthrough: Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Generations

Lea Salonga is a well-known singer and actress from the Philippines, often called a national treasure in her home country. She became famous for her role as Kim in Miss Saigon, which won her a Tony Award in 1991. However, even after winning such a big award, Lea found it difficult to get new roles on Broadway. She explained that her agent would send her to auditions, but many people would say, 'No, we won't see her because she's Asian. ' They could not picture someone like her playing certain characters. This was a big challenge for Lea, but she kept trying and did not give up.

Lea's talent and hard work eventually helped her break more barriers. She became the singing voice for two Disney princesses: Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Mulan. These roles made her even more popular, especially among children. But her journey was not easy. When she was offered the role of Eponine in Les Misérables, she did not have to audition because the producers of Miss Saigon also worked on Les Misérables. They invited her to join the cast, making her the first Asian actress to play a main role in the famous musical. Lea said it was very stressful because she was the only person of color in the cast. She wondered if people thought her casting was just a stunt or an experiment. Still, she knew that if she could play Eponine, it meant that other people from different backgrounds could also have a chance.

Lea is currently performing in Singapore with Nathania Ong, another Asian actress playing Eponine. Nathania says she grew up watching Lea and is proud to follow her example.
