Reading Festival's Thursday Tunes Stir Up Noise Complaints from Locals

Reading Festival is one of the biggest music events in the UK, attracting over 100,000 fans every year during the August bank holiday weekend. The festival is known for its exciting line-up of artists and bands, with this year’s headliners including Charli XCX, rapper Dave, and Chase & Status. Traditionally, the main stage performances start on Friday, but festival organisers, Festival Republic, have applied to extend the music to Thursday evening, from 5pm until midnight. This change would mean that the main stage would be active for four days instead of three, starting in 2027 if approved.

However, this proposal has caused concern among local residents. Associations representing hundreds of people living near the festival site have voiced their objections. They are worried that the extra day of loud music will disrupt their lives, especially since Thursday is a working night for many. Elisa Miles, who leads the Warren & District Residents Association, explained that while they are not against the festival itself and have worked well with the organisers in the past, they believe that music on Thursday night would make it difficult for people to get enough sleep before work or school. She said that loud, amplified music late into the evening would be especially hard for those who cannot leave their homes during the festival.

Another local group, the Caversham and District Residents Association, also raised concerns about the fairness of the extra noise. Despite these worries, Festival Republic argued in their application that their assessment showed Thursday night music would not have a negative impact on nearby residents. They also said that having live music on Thursday would give young ticket holders something to do, keeping them entertained and away from unsupervised areas. The final decision will be made by Reading Borough Council’s licensing committee. If the change is approved, it will take effect from 2027. The debate highlights the challenge of balancing the excitement of a major music festival with the needs of the local community.
