Russell T Davies, the writer and producer who brought Doctor Who back in 2005, has announced he is leaving the series. He shared on Instagram that the future of Doctor Who is 'unpredictable and new,' and he is looking forward to seeing what happens next. The BBC is now offering the show to other platforms, which means it could be made by a different company or shown somewhere new. Brittin said that Doctor Who has changed many times in its 60-year history and will do so again. He believes that the BBC is good at renewing shows and keeping them fresh for fans.

The 2026 Christmas special was supposed to be written by Davies and made by Bad Wolf, a company in Cardiff. It would have continued the story from the May 2025 finale, where Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor changed into Billie Piper's character. But now, the BBC, Davies, and Bad Wolf have decided not to make the Christmas episode. They said this was a tough choice, but they want to focus on the long-term future of Doctor Who. Instead of making a one-off special, they are planning for more episodes in the future. The BBC is also working on a Doctor Who animated series for children, which will be shown on CBeebies. Doctor Who first started in 1963 and has had many actors play the Doctor, including Tom Baker, Sylvester McCoy, and William Hartnell. The show was cancelled in 1989 but came back in 2005, with stars like Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Jodie Whittaker.
