Why 2023 was an uncomfortable year for the West

The year 2023 marked a period of discomfort for Western democracies, particularly the United States and Europe, on the global political stage. A series of setbacks have indicated a shift in the balance of power away from the West. This article explores the reasons behind this shift and potential benefits that could arise from these changes.

Ukraine, a nation at war, has been financially supported by NATO and the EU, with billions of dollars invested in their war effort and economy. However, the war is not progressing favorably for Ukraine, and by extension, for NATO and the EU. A year ago, there was optimism that Ukraine, equipped with modern military gear and intensive Western training, could reclaim territories seized by Russia. Unfortunately, this has not materialized.

The delay in the decision by NATO countries to send modern Main Battle Tanks to Ukraine, due to fear of provoking a rash retaliation from Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been a significant issue. Although the tanks were eventually sent, it was too late. Russian commanders had already anticipated Ukraine's main attack strategy. The Russian army, despite its poor performance in attempting to seize Kyiv in 2022, excels in defense. They successfully thwarted Ukraine's plans, leading to a critical shortage of ammunition and soldiers in Ukraine. This situation poses a significant challenge for the West.
