New science classes for Hong Kong primary school pupils to cover country’s achievements, importance of subject to national security

Attention middle schoolers! There's an update from Hong Kong's education system. Starting from September 2025, primary schools will introduce a new science subject. This subject will highlight China's scientific achievements and explain why science is vital for the country's security. The government's plan is to follow China's goal to strengthen the nation through science and education. This means more focus on STEAM subjects to better prepare you for high school and to encourage some of you to pursue careers in research, innovation, and technology.

The new curriculum will replace the general studies program with specific science and humanities subjects. The science curriculum will be divided into four main areas: life and environment, materials, energy and change, Earth and space, and the relationship between science, technology, engineering, and society. The humanities subject will include topics like sex education, sustainable development, and financial literacy.

School principals have given their thoughts on the new curriculum. While they appreciate the thoroughness of the plan, they're concerned about the short time frame for teachers to adapt. They're calling for early and ongoing teacher training to ensure a smooth transition. The new curriculum will also incorporate national development topics, which schools are already teaching as part of national security education. The education minister has mentioned that there will be some adjustments to the school schedule to accommodate the new subjects.
