Biden opposes any Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear sites

US President Joe Biden has expressed his disapproval of any potential Israeli military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. This statement comes in the wake of a significant escalation in tensions between Iran and Israel, following Iran's launch of approximately 180 missiles aimed at Israel. The attack occurred on Tuesday, and Israel reported that its missile defense system successfully intercepted most of the incoming missiles. Iran has stated that this missile barrage was a direct response to the recent killings of key figures in Hamas and Hezbollah, including Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Additionally, the Iranian attack coincided with Israel's announcement of a ground operation in Lebanon, aimed at dismantling what it described as Hezbollah's 'terrorist infrastructure' in border areas. The United States has consistently urged both nations to de-escalate the situation and has been involved in ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, although these efforts have yet to yield any results. Biden's remarks were made during a visit to North Carolina, where he was assessing the damage caused by a recent hurricane. When a reporter inquired whether he would support an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear sites, Biden firmly replied, 'The answer is no. ' He further indicated that the US would engage in discussions with Israeli officials regarding their next steps. Biden also mentioned that he had consulted with leaders from other G7 nations, all of whom concurred that while Israel has the right to respond to the Iranian aggression, such a response should be measured and proportional. Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the US State Department, reiterated this sentiment during a briefing, stating, 'It’s clear that this was an unprecedented escalation by Iran. Israel has the right to respond to it. We’re having discussions about what that response will be. ' As of now, the White House has not publicly outlined its stance on how Israel should react to the Iranian missile attack. In a video message released on Tuesday, Biden noted that under his direction, US military forces in the region had played a role in intercepting the missiles launched from Iran. He characterized the Iranian attack as 'defeated and ineffective,' highlighting the successful collaboration between the United States and Israel in preparing for and defending against such threats. Biden concluded by affirming, 'Make no mistake, the United States is fully, fully, fully supportive of Israel.
