India, with its massive population of 1. 2 billion mobile users, recently made headlines by introducing a rule that required smartphone makers to pre-install a government-made cyber safety app called Sanchar Saathi on all new devices. The rule stated that the app could not be disabled or removed, and phone companies like Apple and Samsung were given 90 days to comply. The government said this was necessary to help verify the authenticity of handsets and protect users from cyber fraud.

However, the order quickly sparked a public outcry. Many cybersecurity experts argued that forcing people to use the app would violate their right to privacy. They were concerned that the app could be used to monitor users without their consent. Apple and Samsung also pushed back against the directive, saying they had not been consulted beforehand and that the rule could challenge user privacy norms.

After facing backlash from both the public and major smartphone companies, the government decided to withdraw the order. They pointed out that the app was already popular, with 14 million downloads and thousands of frauds reported daily. On one day alone, 600,000 new users registered, showing a huge spike in interest. The Minister of Communications assured everyone that the app would not be used for surveillance. Digital advocacy groups welcomed the decision but said they were waiting for the official legal order to confirm the change.
