UK-Saudi deal to make 'miracle material' at scale
A significant agreement has been reached for the first commercial production of graphene, a remarkable material, in Saudi Arabia. Graphene is often referred to as the world's first two-dimensional material, and it is known for its incredible strength, being approximately 200 times stronger than steel. The Manchester-based company, Graphene Innovations Manchester (GIM), is set to establish a factory in Saudi Arabia to manufacture carbon fiber that is enhanced with graphene. This project is expected to involve an investment of around £250 million, which will also contribute to the creation of over 1,000 jobs in the region. Dr. Vivek Koncherry, the chief executive of GIM, expressed his enthusiasm about the potential of producing graphene at a large scale, stating that it could 'change every aspect of our lives. ' The factory will be constructed in Saudi Arabia with the support of various investors, and the first machine for producing graphene is already operational. The factory is anticipated to be fully functional by the end of 2025. Dr. Koncherry, who studied graphene at the University of Manchester, received support from the university's Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre to launch his company. He believes that graphene can play a crucial role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, and plastic pollution. He emphasized the urgency of developing solutions, saying, 'We can't wait anymore. ' Furthermore, GIM has plans to establish another factory in the UK by 2026, which will also focus on producing graphene-enriched carbon fiber. This development is particularly exciting as graphene has been a subject of research since its discovery in 2004. Professor James Baker from the University of Manchester highlighted the importance of this deal, describing it as a 'significant development' in the commercialization of graphene. He noted that this agreement is indicative of a shift towards new products and applications being introduced to the market.
