In 2021, approximately 48,830 individuals lost their lives due to gun-related injuries, marking an almost 8% increase from the previous year, which was already a record for firearm deaths. While mass shootings and homicides often receive significant media coverage, it is crucial to recognize that more than half of the total gun-related deaths in 2021 were suicides. Specifically, over 20,000 of those deaths were classified as homicides. On average, more than 50 people are killed by firearms each day in the United States, a figure that is considerably higher than in other countries such as Canada, Australia, and England. Similarly, in April of the previous year, Georgia became the 25th state to remove the requirement for a permit to carry a concealed or openly displayed firearm. This law grants any citizen in Georgia the right to carry a firearm without needing a license or permit.
