Traitors Star Embraces Her Unique Anatomy and Endometriosis Journey

Elen Wyn, a Welsh opera singer and former contestant on the TV show The Traitors, has recently shared her experience of living with a rare medical condition called uterus didelphys. At 25 years old, Elen discovered that she has only one kidney, which is unusually large, as well as two wombs and two cervixes. This condition occurs when the uterus fails to fuse properly during development in the womb, resulting in a double uterus. It is a rare congenital disorder that affects a small percentage of women. For Elen, this discovery came after years of unexplained pain and discomfort. She began experiencing severe period pain at the age of 14, which caused her to miss school and avoid sports. Despite her symptoms, doctors often dismissed her concerns, telling her it was just a normal period or that she had a low pain threshold. Elen felt misunderstood and sometimes doubted by medical professionals. Her journey to a diagnosis was long and difficult. It took ten years before she was finally diagnosed with endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere in the body, causing pain and other symptoms. Elen started to suspect she had endometriosis after watching videos on TikTok where others described similar experiences. The full extent of her condition was revealed in a stressful way. After a second ultrasound, a doctor assumed she knew about her single kidney, which she did not. During an internal ultrasound, a nurse struggled to locate her cervix, and more staff were called in to help. Elen described feeling anxious and confused as medical professionals tried to make sense of her anatomy. Doctors questioned her about her periods, asking if she had two each month, which she did not. They also asked about her use of tampons and pads, and whether she continued to bleed after inserting a tampon. Elen explained that everything seemed normal except for having two wombs. She was left with many questions, such as why both wombs bleed at the same time and whether they are somehow synchronized. Despite the confusion, Elen expressed gratitude for her abnormal anatomy, as it led to the discovery of her stage 4 endometriosis. She felt that the diagnosis was something she really needed after years of feeling dismissed and misunderstood.

Uterus didelphys is a rare condition that develops before birth. Normally, two tubes fuse to form a single uterus, but in this condition, they remain separate, creating two wombs, each with its own cervix. Sometimes, there are also two vaginal canals. People with uterus didelphys may experience pain during sex, severe cramping before and during periods, heavy bleeding, and blood leakage when using a tampon. They are also at higher risk for miscarriages and premature labor. Elen is now waiting for a laparoscopy, a surgical procedure to remove the endometriosis. She believed she was on the waiting list for nine months, but later found out she had never been referred. She has now been added to the list, but the wait has started over. Elen hopes to get answers and relief from her symptoms soon.
