Man disguised as lawyer kills gang leader in court

In a shocking incident in Sri Lanka, a notorious gang leader named Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathne was shot and killed inside a courthouse by a gunman disguised as a lawyer. According to police reports, the gunman used a revolver that was smuggled into the courthouse hidden inside a hollowed-out book. The police are currently searching for a female suspect, identified as 25-year-old Pinpura Dewage Ishara Sewwandi, who allegedly assisted the gunman. The authorities have announced a reward for anyone who can provide information leading to her capture. Sanjeewa, who was also known by the nickname Ganemulle Sanjeewa, was in court to face serious charges, including multiple murder cases. He had been in police custody since his arrest in September 2023. On the day of the shooting, he was escorted to the courthouse by a dozen police officers for his court appearance. After being shot, he was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The gunman managed to escape the scene initially but was later apprehended by the police. Authorities have reported that he has used several different names, complicating the investigation. The incident has raised significant concerns about security within the courthouse. In response to the shooting, lawmakers in parliament discussed the ongoing issue of gang violence in the country. An opposition member of parliament described the situation as a major security concern. Health and mass media minister Nalinda Jayatissa, who had previously promised to take action against organized crime, reiterated the government's commitment to addressing the issue seriously. Following the shooting, the authorities are reviewing security measures in courthouses and implementing new protocols, including the presence of armed guards when certain individuals are brought to court. Typically, armed security personnel are not allowed in courtrooms, but justice minister Harshana Nanayakkara stated that this policy may change in light of recent events. According to police data, at least nine people have lost their lives this year due to gang-related shootings.
