Teen breaks record by climbing Earth's highest peaks

Nima Rinji Sherpa, an 18-year-old from Nepal, has made headlines around the world by breaking the record for being the youngest person to climb all of the highest peaks on Earth. On a Wednesday morning, he reached the summit of Mount Shishapangma, which is the eighth-highest mountain in the world. This remarkable feat came shortly after he completed his high school exams, showcasing not only his climbing skills but also his determination and hard work. Nima began his journey into high-altitude climbing at the age of 16 and has now successfully summited all 14 of the mountains that are recognized as eight-thousanders, which are peaks that rise over 8,000 meters above sea level. He accomplished this incredible achievement in just 740 days, a testament to his dedication and passion for mountaineering. His climbing partner, Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, accompanied him on each of these challenging treks, providing support and companionship throughout their adventures. Nima's ascent on Wednesday was not just a personal milestone; it also served as a powerful statement about the capabilities of Sherpas. Traditionally, Sherpas are seen as guides and helpers for foreign climbers, but Nima wants to change that perception. 'We are not just guides; we are trailblazers,' he stated confidently. Nima comes from a family with a rich history in mountaineering. His family runs Seven Summit Treks, which is the largest mountaineering expedition company in Nepal. After Nima reached the summit, his father, Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, received the news via satellite phone. Tashi recalled the moment fondly, saying, 'He told me, 'Dad, I reached the summit at 6:05 Chinese time. ' My colleague Pasang Norbu and I have arrived. ' Tashi was proud of his son but remained calm, saying, 'I had faith in you. Return safely. ' Nima's record-breaking climb has been confirmed by Rakesh Gurung, the Director of Adventure Tourism and Mountaineering Branch under Nepal's Department of Tourism. He stated, 'The peak has been confirmed this morning. Now I understand that there is a matter of giving a certificate after returning to the base camp. ' The previous record for the youngest climber to summit all eight-thousanders was held by Mingma Gyabu 'David' Sherpa, who achieved this at the age of 30 in 2019. Nima's accomplishment is significant, and it highlights the incredible potential of young climbers from Nepal. All 14 eight-thousanders are located in Asia, primarily in the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges.
