Young authors describe 'awesome' town in new guide
In Bedford, a group of enthusiastic schoolchildren has come together to create a remarkable guidebook titled the Book of Bedford. This unique book is a collection of stories and illustrations that reflect the children's perspectives on their beloved town. The project involved 265 local pupils who contributed their thoughts and creativity to showcase Bedford in a vibrant and engaging way. The Book of Bedford was developed with the support of Bedford Creative Arts and talented artists like Andy Field, Beckie Darlington, and Katie Allen. They believe that the book beautifully captures the essence of Bedford as a joyful and lively place. One of the young authors, Aeirth, expressed her feelings about the town by saying, 'It makes me think Bedford is a way better place. ' The book highlights the town's rivers, green spaces, and historical architecture, making it an educational and entertaining read. The children from Brickhill, King's Oak, Priory, and Putnoe primary schools proudly presented their book during a launch event at the local library. The excitement was palpable as they gathered to share their work with family and friends. Madina, one of the contributors, enthusiastically stated, 'It totally definitely slays. That's the main reason you should get it. ' She believes that the book will change how people view Bedford. Aiéhla added, 'I'm like, Bedford's awesome,' while Riccardo mentioned, 'It's a funny read and you can also learn about Bedford. ' Emmanuel pointed out that the book reveals all the hidden gems and favorite spots in Bedford. The children even designed a flag for their town, with blue representing the river. Zoshia, one of the 16 editors of the book, shared her love for the project. She particularly enjoys Russell Park and its climbing frames, describing Bedford as a calm place filled with greenery and parks. She encouraged everyone to visit and explore the beauty of the town, especially near the Embankment. Artist Katie Allen, who illustrated the book, expressed her joy in creating the visuals. She found it incredibly fun to interpret the children's words, allowing her to draw imaginative scenes and important Bedford locations. She gained a fresh perspective from the children's viewpoints, noting their concerns about road safety, litter, and the importance of having fun. The young editors had the opportunity to meet their local MP, Mohammad Yasin, and councillor John Wheeler, which added to the excitement of the project. The Book of Bedford is now available for purchase at the Eagle Gallery on St Peters Street. The project received support from various local organizations, including the Bedford Educational Association, The Harpur Trust, Gale Family Charity Trust, and Arts Council England. The children hope that their book will inspire others to appreciate the beauty and charm of Bedford.
