Erik the Polar Bear Roars Back to Hull's Maritime Museum Spotlight!

Erik the polar bear has made his return to Hull Maritime Museum, just in time for its reopening after a six-year renovation that cost £20. 4 million. Erik is a stuffed polar bear who was originally captured in the Arctic in the 1860s by the crew of the Dundee whaling ship, SS Erik. He has been a popular exhibit at the museum for over forty years, and now he will be featured in the Age of Sail gallery when the museum opens its doors again on August 8.

Robin Diaper, the curator of social and maritime history at the museum, explained that Erik's return is important not only because he is well-loved by visitors, but also because he helps tell the story of Hull's deep connections to the Arctic whaling industry. In 2010, conservationists discovered newspapers from 1874 hidden inside Erik's body, which is a fascinating reminder of the Victorian methods used to preserve animals brought back from distant places. Erik's presence in the museum also gives people a chance to think about how attitudes toward wildlife, conservation, and the natural world have changed over time.

Mike Ross, the leader of Hull City Council, said that Erik is one of the museum's most memorable exhibits, having captured the imagination of generations of families, schoolchildren, and visitors. The museum's restoration has created a new and exciting experience for everyone, and the building itself is an important part of Hull's history. The museum is free to visit, but during busy times, visitors are encouraged to book tickets. The restoration was funded by Hull City Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and Erik's return was made possible by a long-term loan from The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery and Museum. Hull Maritime Museum tells the story of the city's maritime heritage, including trade, migration, fishing, and whaling. Other exhibits include whale bones and artifacts that show how Hull was connected to the sea and to other parts of Britain and the world.
