Smart Rings and Iron Shots: Revolutionizing Heart Failure Care in Jersey!
Jersey has been chosen to run a new clinical trial that could help people with a certain type of heart failure. The trial is for patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction, also known as HFpEF. Doctors want to find out if giving iron through a vein can help these patients feel better and improve their ability to exercise. To do this, patients will wear a smart ring on their finger and a patch on their thigh for 14 weeks. These devices will collect information about how active the patients are and how their bodies respond to the treatment.
Dr Aaron Henry, who works in the cardiology department at Jersey Hospital, is helping to lead the trial. He says it is exciting to use new technology to help patients. Normally, doctors check if iron treatment is working by having patients do a six-minute walk test. However, this only gives a small look at how the patient is doing. The smart ring and patch will let doctors see how active the patient is all the time, not just during a short test. The devices send data to the patient’s phone, and then the information is uploaded to the cloud so doctors can study it and see if the treatment is making a difference.
The patch measures things like how many steps the patient takes, how much they move, and how often they stand up from sitting. The ring checks things like heart rate and other body signals. Dr Henry says the trial is open to patients of all ages, including people in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s. He believes it is important for older people to be included in new technology. Tony Moretta, the CEO of Digital Jersey, says the trial is important because it can help improve health care on the island. Digital Jersey has given £200,000 to support the trial. Tony says Jersey is a great place to test new ideas, and if the trial is successful, it could help people in other places too. He believes technology is being used more and more to improve health, and Jersey should be part of this trend.
