Family want books in hospital in daughter's memory

The O'Leary Hall family is on a heartfelt mission to create a library of e-books for children who are in the hospital, in memory of their beloved daughter, Rose. Rose tragically passed away at the young age of four due to complications from a rare heart defect. This condition, known as an interrupted aortic arch, affects about one in 50,000 babies and can lead to serious health issues. Rose spent a significant amount of her short life in hospitals, and during those long hours, her parents, Katie and Sue, found solace in reading to her. They believe that stories can transport children to different worlds, providing comfort and distraction during difficult times. The couple fondly remembers how Rose enjoyed being read to by her older brother, Will, who is now nine years old. They want to establish 'Rose's Library' as a way to keep her spirit alive and to help other children who are facing similar challenges. Sue, who is 48 years old, expressed how reading can create a sense of familiarity and safety for children in the hospital. She explained that the days can feel incredibly long and stressful for parents, and having a story to share can provide a much-needed anchor. The O'Leary Halls are not only focused on their own experience but also want to reach out to all children, including those who may not have had the chance to develop a love for reading. They have successfully raised over £1,000 for their project, which they initially envisioned as a physical collection of books. However, due to infection control concerns in hospitals, they decided to create an electronic library that children can access through smart devices. They also plan to include audiobooks so that families can enjoy stories together, further enhancing the experience for both parents and children. Sue described Rose as a vibrant and lively child who brought joy to everyone around her. The family is determined to honor her memory by providing a resource that can bring comfort and joy to other families during their toughest times.
