Cornwall's Green Revolution: 2 Million Trees and Growing!

The Forest for Cornwall scheme began in 2019 as a way to help Cornwall deal with climate change. Recently, the project received £8. 7 million in government funding, which will allow it to expand even further. Organizers are celebrating the planting of more than two million trees across the county. Cornwall Council has set a goal to create 8,000 hectares of new tree canopy by 2035, which is a huge area covered with trees. The project has involved planting trees in communities, farms, schools, and streets throughout Cornwall. The scheme is also part of a larger plan to help England reach 16. 5% tree and woodland cover by 2050.

Loic Rich, who is Cornwall's cabinet member for environment and climate change, explained that the Forest for Cornwall improves the local landscape, towns, and villages. He said that trees bring beauty and benefits to people's doorsteps, making them healthier and happier. Trees provide much-needed shade during hot weather, which is especially important as heatwaves become more common. The project also helps farmers by making their farms more resilient and supports wildlife by providing homes for birds, mammals, and insects. Trees help keep rivers and streams clean and cool, reduce water run-off, and improve the health of the soil.

Increasing tree cover also helps reduce flooding in coastal towns and builds resilience against a changing climate. The latest grant from Defra's Trees Programme comes after hundreds of trees were destroyed in January when strong winds brought gusts of up to 100mph. These winds knocked down mature trees at St Michael's Mount near Penzance and Trewithen in Truro. Ben Thomas, who works at Treveddoe Farm near Cardinham, has planted 2,500 trees. He said that without the knowledge, contacts, and funding, it would have been difficult to start the project. Now, his farm has a fantastic network of trees that is already making a difference. The Forest for Cornwall is helping the county become greener and more prepared for the future, benefiting both people and nature.
