Beryl Cook: The Underrated Queen of British Working-Class Art

Although Beryl Cook was once called Britain's most popular painter, her art was not always taken seriously by critics. The new exhibition in Plymouth features more than 80 of her paintings, as well as sculptures, textiles, photographs, and letters. It also includes works by other artists who share Cook's love for community and individuality. The curators say that Cook's art documented communities and identities that were often ignored by society and art history. Her paintings from the 1970s to the 2000s show working-class joy, body positivity, and queer culture with a sophistication that is only now being fully appreciated. The exhibition aims to show that Beryl Cook was not just a painter of funny pictures, but a serious artist who captured the heart of British life.
