Turning Empty Shops into Vibrant Art Hubs: Gloucester’s Creative Revival

In the city of Gloucester, an arts group called Gloucester Arts and Social Projects, or Gasp, is starting a new project to make the city more colorful and lively. They are turning empty shops into temporary art galleries and studios for a whole year. This project is called Meanwhile in Gloucester, and it is free for everyone to enjoy. The group is working with local artists and residents to create art events and exhibitions. They received a grant of eighty-four thousand three hundred pounds from Arts Council England to help make this happen.

Phillipa Milne from Arts Council England said that not enough people in Gloucester have been able to enjoy art and culture for a long time. She is excited to see how these art galleries in empty shops will bring new people to the high street. She hopes it will help artists and residents talk to each other and understand the importance of meeting in person. The idea for this project came from research by the University of Gloucestershire, which found that using empty spaces for art can help bring life back to town centers that are changing.

Gasp will be setting up in the Eastgate Shopping Centre, where they will create an art gallery and three studios for new artists. They will also work with young people and other creative people in the city to bring more art and events to Gloucester. In the past, Gasp has turned unused spaces into places for art and community activities. Hannah Thomson, who is one of the leaders of Gasp, said that people in Gloucester want to see more modern art and have more chances to join in creative activities. Visitors have been happy to see empty shops used in new and creative ways. The project hopes to make the city more exciting and give everyone a chance to enjoy art together.
