Cheers to Art: Simon Gee’s Portraits Party at the Pub!

Simon Gee was a well-known artist and teacher who spent over thirty years in Coventry, inspiring many people with his art and personality. Originally from Walsall, Simon became famous for painting portraits of people he met in everyday life, especially those he found in pubs or on the street. He was easy to recognize with his dark-rimmed glasses, unique moustache, and friendly smile. Simon passed away in March, but his friends and former students wanted to celebrate his life in a way that matched his love for people and fun. Instead of a traditional memorial service, they organized an exhibition of his work at the Twisted Barrel Brewery, a local pub in Coventry. The exhibition will last for a month, and all the money raised will go to Myton Hospices, a charity that supports people with serious illnesses.

Simon was not interested in showing his art in fancy galleries. According to his friend Mark James, Simon preferred the relaxed and lively atmosphere of pubs. He often painted people he did not know, sometimes asking workers in the street if he could take their photo. Many of his portraits feature people wearing bright hi-vis jackets, and his friends say that Simon had a special way of making everyone feel important. Geraldine O'Malley, another friend, remembers how surprised people were when Simon actually painted them after meeting them by chance. She also said that spending time with Simon was always an adventure, and he made every outing fun and memorable.

Simon was more than just an artist; he was also a dedicated teacher at Coventry Technical College for over thirty years. Many local artists say that Simon helped them believe in themselves and encouraged them to keep making art. His friend George Wagstaffe, who is also an artist, described Simon as a gentleman who was different from many other artists because he was so outgoing and friendly. Simon's art has been shown in several pubs around Coventry, and now his friends hope that some of the people he painted will be able to see their portraits again. Simon's colorful clothes, cheerful personality, and love for people made him a beloved figure in the community, and his art will continue to inspire others for years to come.
