Vibrant Tapestries Weave Bangladeshi Women's UK Stories in Art

The Stitching Light exhibition is a unique art installation that combines textiles and light to tell the stories of Bangladeshi women who have moved to the UK. The exhibition features many tapestries painted in vibrant purple and other bright colors, each one showing different scenes such as houses, greenery, and people. Their personal stories were used to create Bangladeshi folk art, which was then turned into textile panels. These panels were hand-painted by an artist in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and are now being displayed at The Courtyard at Middlesbrough Town Hall over the weekend.

Rumana Yasmin, the founder of Bok Bok Books in Middlesbrough, explained that the project is not only about reflecting on the past and where the women and their families came from. It is also about celebrating the contributions they make to their new communities. She mentioned that Middlesbrough experienced riots last year, but this art project brings hope and shows that there is a strong sense of solidarity and support among people. The exhibition is meant to reassure the community and highlight the positive impact of diversity.

The Stitching Light project involved women from several places, including Middlesbrough, Tower Hamlets, Leeds, Bradford, Worcester, and Salford. These women shared their stories, which were then transformed into beautiful tapestries. Some of the tapestries show scenes like a person lying in bed, painted with bright colors such as green, yellow, blue, and red. Others depict buildings and greenery, using colors like yellow, red, and blue. Lou Scholes, the creative producer at Borderlands, said that the artwork is powerful and full of passion. The stories told through the tapestries are about courage, resilience, and the importance of preserving culture. People who visit the exhibition can connect with these stories and gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of Bangladeshi women in the UK.
