AI products like ChatGPT much hyped but not much used, study says
A recent survey conducted by the Reuters Institute and Oxford University has shed light on the limited adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) products such as ChatGPT, despite the widespread hype surrounding them. The study, which involved 12,000 participants from six countries, including the UK, revealed that only 2% of British respondents use these tools on a daily basis. However, the research also uncovered a contrasting trend among young individuals, particularly those aged 18 to 24, who displayed a higher level of interest in embracing this technology. Dr. Richard Fletcher, the primary author of the report, emphasized the significant disparity between the exaggerated publicity of AI and the actual level of public interest. The study specifically focused on generative AI tools, the latest generation of products capable of delivering human-like responses to text prompts, as well as generating images, audio, and video. The launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 brought generative AI to the forefront, triggering a competitive race among tech companies to develop their own features. Despite the substantial investment and attention dedicated to generative AI, it has not yet integrated into the routine internet usage of the general public. In the UK, 30% of the population admitted to being unfamiliar with prominent products like ChatGPT.
