From Ruins to Radiance: Swallow Hotel Sign Soars as Stunning Art

A well-known hotel sign that once stood high above Stockton has been transformed into a unique piece of art. The Swallow Hotel, which was built in the 1970s, was a landmark in the town for many years. Its bright blue sign, shaped like a swallow bird, was easy to spot and became a symbol of the area. In 2023, the hotel was demolished to make way for a new development called the Waterfront scheme. Instead of letting the sign be forgotten, Preston Park Museum asked artist Stuart Langley to create something new from the old materials.

Stuart Langley, who grew up in Darlington and now lives in Hartlepool, remembered the Swallow Hotel sign from his childhood. He said it was a magical sight, with three birds flying high above Teesside. Langley worked with DJ Camp, an artist from Shildon, to design a new sculpture. They used the blue glass from the original sign, which had been broken and damaged by time and weather. The glass shards were arranged in a metal frame shaped like a swallow in flight. When sunlight shines through the window at Preston Park Museum, the blue and purple glass glows with color.

The Swallow Hotel was a tall, eight-story building made of red bricks. It had rows of large, square windows and a blue sign at the top that read 'Swallow Hotel. ' After the hotel was demolished, the sign was saved by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council. Nigel Cooke, a council member, said the sign had been part of the town's skyline for over 50 years. He hopes the new artwork will bring back good memories for people and inspire them to think about Stockton's future. The project was funded by Arts Council England, and the sculpture will be on display at Preston Park Museum until 2026. Visitors can come and see how something old and broken has been turned into something beautiful and new.
