Robots Take the Scalpel: Carlisle Hospital's High-Tech Surgery Leap

The Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle has made a big step forward by performing its first robot-assisted surgeries. This new technology uses a robot with four arms and 3D vision to help doctors carry out operations more precisely. The robot is not automatic; instead, a surgeon sits at a special console and controls the robot's movements during the surgery. This allows the doctor to make very careful and small movements, which can be difficult to do by hand. So far, about 17 patients have had surgeries using this robot, mostly for bowel cancer and other small abdominal problems. The hospital says that using the robot means patients have less pain, smaller scars, and can recover more quickly.

Chris Rao, a colorectal consultant and surgeon at the hospital, is leading the use of this new technology. He believes that soon, 90 percent of the hospital's keyhole surgeries will be done with the help of a robot. Rao says that people in Cumbria deserve the same high quality of care as people in other parts of the country. The robot they are using is called the da Vinci Xi, which has been used in other hospitals in England for over ten years, but it is new for the Cumberland Infirmary. The hospital hopes to bring a similar robot to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven soon.

One of the first patients to benefit from the robot was Lee Ellis, who had his gallbladder removed. Lee says he is recovering faster than he expected and that his scars are much neater than from previous surgeries. Dr. Rao explains that robotic surgery can improve outcomes for cancer patients and reduce the number of complications after surgery. Patients often go home one or two days earlier and have fewer problems, which means doctors can help more people each day. The hospital is excited about this new technology and hopes it will help many more patients in the future.
